Someday I'll Love Ocean Vuong

Ocean, don’t be afraid. The end of the road is so far aheadit is already behind us.Don’t worry. Your father is only your fatheruntil one of you forgets. Like how the spinewon’t remember its wingsno matter how many times our kneeskiss the pavement. Ocean, are you listening? The most beautiful partof your body is whereveryour mother’s shadow falls. Here’s the house with childhoodwhittled down to a single red tripwire.Don’t worry. Just call it horizon& you’ll never reach it.Here’s today. Jump. I promise it’s nota lifeboat. Here’s the manwhose arms are wide enough to gatheryour leaving. & here the moment, just after the lights go out, when you can still seethe faint torch between his legs. How you use it again & againto find your own hands. You asked for a second chance& are given a mouth to empty into.Don’t be afraid, the gunfireis only the sound of peopletrying to live a little longer. Ocean. Ocean, get up. The most beautiful part of your bodyis where it’s headed. & remember, loneliness is still time spentwith the world. Here’sthe room with everyone in it.Your dead friends passingthrough you like windthrough a wind chime. Here’s a deskwith the gimp leg & a brickto make it last. Yes, here’s a roomso warm & blood-close,I swear, you will wake—& mistake these wallsfor skin.

Yoga To The People

The Invitation

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon... I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain.
I want to know if you can sit with pain, my mine or your own, without moving to hide it, or fade it, or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes, without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself. If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty when it is not pretty every day. And if you can source your own life from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "Yes!"
It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children.
It doesn't interest me who you know, or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

I had this dream last night

That my parents moved out
leaving me alone
to live together
in a commune

In my dream
I loved the community of the commune
Everyone worked together
learned together
played together

In my dream
they wanted to know what I could contribute
to the community
the first thing I said was
KNITTING!

In this dream, my parents slept together in a twin size bed
bodies intertwined
hugging each other for dear life

I can feel so lonely
so incompetent
and insecure
over thinking if I truly belong
anywhere.

What is a dream
but a fantasy
what is a fantasy
but a dream

What does yoga truly mean to me?
How do I apply it to my life?

Guided Meditation

Opening up
repressed emotions
is scary as fuck

hot yoga was intense
but meditation is a whole new realm

why is it so hard to look inside myself?
if we are all one, if we are all connected
why do I feel so alien?

god i sure crave a hug.
god i wish i knew how to give love.

Meditation
in all its different forms

i feel so alone
why was i even born?

What am I doing here?
How do I get rid of fear?

Connect with me
walk with me

see what I see
Be what I be

Together or alone
here for at home

Trees
wind
grass
soil

feel
within
relax
recoil

Yoga to heal me

Today was the second day of the first weekend of my 10 weekend yoga teacher training program.

Yesterday evening was the introduction to 61 fellow students, 10 mentors and two teachers.
We got to meet the man behind the idea to open donation based yoga studios and heard from several people who took his teacher training and made yoga into a career.

I am depending on this experience to save me.

They said to TRUST THE PROCESS and KEEP AND OPEN MIND.
This experience is what you make of it.

Today we began the day with a 60 minute yoga class and afterwards I took a walk through central park before heading to the St Marks studio for the first official lecture with Sam.

He lead the crew in a discussion answering the question WHAT IS YOGA?

What is yoga?
Why have I chosen it as the thing that will save me?
Will I be able to do it for the rest of my life?

One of my favorite responses was "yoga is a word. We give it life."
"Yoga is different every time."
"Yoga is a spiritual movement into exploring the breath in different postures."

The lecture slowly turned into a philosophical conversation. Sam talked about having self compassion for the paradox between self acceptance and wanting radical change.

SELF ACCEPTANCE vs RADICAL CHANGE

He explained the importance of our words in our dialogues. Even though we are the ones talking we're not the only ones communicating. The way our students respond to our words says a lot about how well we direct them.

Healing through yoga

"The Body's Frame

The human frame aligns itself to support and distribute our weight with the greatest economy of effort- the arch of the foot, the precise curves of the spine, the design of every joint, the tilt of the pelvis- and is designed to combine freedom of movement with strength and protection of vital organs. The joints are held firmly by strong, elastic ligaments, and the whole structure is supported, moved and returned to alignment by the muscles.
Yoga asanas give muscles and ligaments a slow, non-violent stretch, without the following sharp contractions of most sports. Stretching a muscles helps it contract more strongly, while slow movements and deep breathing increase the oxygen supply to the muscles, preventing the accumulation of lactic acid in the fibers. The stretching and contracting muscles stimulate circulation to the tissues and organs and cause an increased venous return.

For all common health problems, prevention is better than a cure- regular practice of the full asana sequence, which is designed to stimulate the the circulation, and to work systematically on every part of the body so that the muscles dare healthy and in balance, will keep you young and agile through life."

Muscles
Your skeletal muscles are ranged symmetrically, left to right and front to back, in layers with different actions.
Yoga asanas symmetrically work each opposing set of muscles in turn, keeping them youthful, elastic and in balance with each other.

Anyway

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered.
Love them anyway!
If you do good, people will accuse you
of selfish, ulterior motives.
Do good anyway!
If you are successful, you will win false friends and enemies.
Succeed anyway!
The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway!
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway!
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
 Build anyway!
People really need help but may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway!
Give the world the best you have
and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway!
